From the Toronto Undergroundexpress

Alok - Logan's Run

Alok - All the Lovebirds are Dead Silent

Alok Leung is a guy from Hong Kong who seems know the island’s indie music scene like the back of his hand (a modern James Murphy if you will, except steeped in the current musical climate rather than the old rusty canon, though I'm sure he’s familiar with that too). Maybe this is why his own music is so eclectic and all over the place (he is also the owner of Lona records). Calling himself simply Alok, so far there have been two albums; 2001’s 31 Minutes to Midnight and 2005’s 29 Minutes From the End. The later contains some pretty cool videos on a bonus DVD and guest spots by a smorgasbord of underground Hong Kong talent, which gives each song a distinct flava. You can get em both at Monitor records, or if you like to window shop, go here.

“Logan’s Run” is a mammoth krautrock song (aren’t they all) masquerading in the land of shoegaze with the vocals upfront and deadpan, while “All the Lovebirds are Dead Silent” is a beautiful instrumental piece featuring some very poignant guitar work, I must say. Lona is also putting out a series of 3” CD singles exploring music described by them as “avant-garde,” “electro-acoustic,” and “free jazz.” Don’t all of you go clicking on that link at once, now.

If you know who doesn’t beat me to it, expect to see some HYPE SHIT from Load real soon. [edit: aha ha, they already have, and the exact song too!]
